A Nissan new car IMS sedan concept has been recently revealed at the 2019 Detroit Motor Show. Any Nissan new vehicles are interesting because they showcase features and technology that we may soon see on production cars. This is certainly an exciting concept with a futuristic seating layout and an augmented reality connectivity feature set. This electric sedan could be a preview for an entirely new design ethos for the Japanese car manufacturer. Let’s take a closer look at what we’ve learned so far.
The IMS Concept
At a glance, this is a high riding electrically powered sedan that Nissan describes as a “study in duality and contrast.” Nissan has made the claim that the IMS concept can only be classified in a segment of its own because it’s an “elevated sports sedan.” The external body shape is dominated by vertical and horizontal straight lines. There is a floating roof that takes full advantage of the further forward A-pillar and the extended C-pillar points. At the front, you will find a Nissan V-motion front grille that has had a futuristic makeover. The grille fascia extends into the headlight clusters and accompanying running lights. The wheel arches are filled with 22” alloy wheels that help to create a coupe like sedan. The exterior has an eye catching geometric graphic display that was inspired by a traditional Japanese “Asanoha” pattern. This same pattern extends onto the smoked glass roof where it turns into a gold colour. This gold colouration can also be found on the roof accents and alloy wheels to bring the whole design aesthetic together.
New Technology on Display
The exterior lighting units will change colour depending on the driving mode chosen. As an example: if the IMS concept is placed into an autonomous driving mode, the headlights and rear lights will blink blue to alert other road users to the current driving status. This car is also equipped with some interesting next generation systems. The most impressive is an “Invisible to Visible” 3d interface that can help the driver to see around a corner. This system can also provide visual information on traffic jams, and it will even create a virtual passenger to keep you company during your drive!
Engine, Batteries and Cabin Layout
The power is supplied by a dual motor electric drivetrain that generates 360 kW of power and 800 Nm of torque. This is stored in a 115 kWh lithium ion battery that can travel 600 km on a single charge. This battery system is located under the floor, and this provides plenty of space in the cabin. This has allowed Nissan to create an innovative 2+1+2 seating layout where occupants up front can pivot the seats 180º to create a cabin meeting room. The rear bench seating can be configured as traditional three seat area, or a single “Premier” seat can be created.
