Exploring Airbags in the New Nissan Qashqai

The new Nissan Qashqai is an excellent car, and this extends to the onboard safety measures. One of the primary technologies for keeping us safe in a collision is the airbag. In the last few decades, the airbag has evolved as a main component in car design and must pass rigorous testing criteria. However, many people are unfamiliar with how an airbag works and some of the terminology used to describe them. Let’s take a closer look at airbag technology and how it keeps us safer in a collision.

How Airbags Work:

Modern airbags are equipped with satellite sensor technology that activates the inflator if a collision over 24 km/hr occurs. The inflator ignites a mix of two chemicals, potassium nitrate (KNO3) and sodium azide (NaN3) to form a rapid expansion of nitrogen gas. This gas then quickly inflated the airbag, pushing it out its housing, through a weakened area in the cover and into your body or face to protect it. As you body or face hits the airbag, it affords more protection by cushioning the impact further through partial deflation. Typically, the airbags on the driver’s side trigger to full inflation in 20-30 milliseconds, which is half the time it would take to blink. The angle of impact is also a factor, an angle of 30° on either side of the car, would not trigger the front airbags. So, frontal airbags will not be deployed if there is a rollover or a side impact.

The Airbag Location and Their Purpose:

Many people simply look at the specifications of a car and just equate more airbags as better. This is true, but to go a little deeper, different airbags can play specific roles to keep you safe in a wide variety of situations.

Frontal Airbags: they offer protection from frontal collisions and are located in the dash and steering wheel.

Side Airbags: these deploy during side collisions and perhaps in a rollover.

Knee Airbags: they deploy in frontal collisions to protect the knees from impact with the dash and/or steering column.

Curtain Airbags: these inflate from the seat side upwards and stay inflated.

Footbags: these airbags fill the footwell and help to reduce injuries to lower legs and feet.

Seatbelt Airbags: these inflate from the seatbelt and offer protection to the shoulder and torso.

Side Torso Airbags: these deploy from the side of the seat and remain inflated during the entire collision.
