The new Nissan Navara is a great addition to the brand’s lineup, offering drivers a practical, yet comfortable vehicle. While it is easy to overlook the humble pickup, here we’ll explore the Nissan Navara 2018 range, so you can have the details you need to make an informed purchase decision.

The Variants

The Nissan Navara range starts with the fleet focused, entry grade RX dual cab; this is available with standard automatic transmission. Next comes the popular ST variant that accounts for approximately 36 percent of the sales for the Navara range. At the top of the range is the ST-X, which takes 30 percent of the sales. According to sales figures, 90 percent of all Navaras sold are a dual cab, while 80 percent are the 4×4 variants. There is also an SL variant that pairs the more powerful engine of the ST with the stripped back cabin of the RX.

Range Features

The RX is undoubtedly built to work with 16 inch steel wheels, but has several refinements including cruise control, reverse camera in the rear view mirror, power windows, and automatic halogen headlights. There is also three 12 volt inputs, USB connections, and Bluetooth audio/phone streaming. The RX also features safety features that are available throughout the range including ISOFIX anchor points, seven airbags and five star ANCAP rating.

The SL has fatter tyres, a colour 5.0 inch display, LED daytime running lights, side steps, full LED headlights and an electronically engaged rear diff lock.

The ST adds alloy wheels, leather coated steering wheel, front fog lights, heated side mirrors, alloy sports bar and 7.0 inch touchscreen featuring 3D mapping.

Finally, at the top of the range, the ST-X adds digital climate control, push button start, roof rails, 18 inch alloys, hill descent control, rear parking sensors and LED indicators.

There is also an optional package offering a sunroof and heated leather seats.

The Capacities

All the dual cab 4×4 new Nissan Navara models are rated for a 3500 kilogram tow load when trailer brakes are fitted. The payload varies from the RX at 1015 kilograms and the ST-X at 931 kilograms. The RX is also available with leaf springs and drop side metal tray offering a higher payload rate of 1144 kilograms.

The dual cab models are 5255 millimetres long and 1850 millimetres wide, but the RX is 60 millimetres narrower. All models have a wheelbase of 3150 millimetres. All the variants except the RX have a 12.4 metre turning circle. The RX has a skinnier wheel and tyre package, so can manage a 360 in just 11.8 metres.

There are two diesels available; the RX has a 2.3 litre single turbocharger unit with a peak output of 120 kW, while the SL, ST, and ST-X has a 2.3 litre unit with two turbochargers, boosting the output to 140 kW. While the RX has a less powerful drivetrain, it merely feels a little coarser with a load, if you’re grading on a curve.

Despite the twin turbo offering both more power and torque, it offers greater fuel economy at 7.0 litres per 100 kilometres compared to 7.1 litres for the RX.
